Why Employee Tenure Awards Are a Retention Strategy — Awards for PRD and OIQ

Most companies mark employee anniversaries with a card, a brief mention in a team meeting, or at best, a generic plaque that ends up in a drawer. But tenure recognition — done properly — is one of the most cost-effective retention tools a business has. This project for PRD and OIQ — two Quebec-based professional organizations — is a strong example of what that looks like in practice. Custom oak awards with colored acrylic overlay, a personalized dedication engraved on the back, and a front panel carrying each recipient's name, milestone, and date. Not a batch of identical objects. A batch of individual ones.


01 — Why It Matters

Tenure Recognition Is a Retention Strategy, Not Just a Ceremony

Employee turnover is expensive. Depending on the role, replacing a staff member can cost anywhere from half to twice their annual salary — recruiting, onboarding, lost productivity, institutional knowledge walking out the door. Against that backdrop, investing in meaningful recognition at the 5, 10, or 30-year mark is not a soft benefit. It's a business decision with a measurable return.

Research consistently shows that employees who feel genuinely recognized are significantly more likely to stay. But the keyword is genuinely. A certificate printed five minutes before the ceremony doesn't move the needle. What moves the needle is the moment a person realizes the organization paid specific attention to their specific contribution — not just their name on a list.

The back of each award in this project carries a personal message written specifically for that employee — their years of service, their qualities, the trust the organization places in them. It's not a template. It reads like a letter. That's the difference between a trophy and a reason to stay.

02 — The Project

PRD and OIQ: Two Organizations, One Award System

PRD and OIQ are both Quebec-based professional organizations, each with their own brand identity — PRD in green, OIQ in blue. The award brief required a format that could serve both organizations within the same production run, distinguishable by color, unified by structure.

The solution was a solid oak block with a laser-cut acrylic geometric grid applied to the front face — vivid green for PRD recipients, deep navy blue for OIQ. The grid pattern creates visual texture and brand color simultaneously. From a distance, the color identifies the organization. Up close, the wood grain showing through the cut-outs gives each piece warmth and individuality.

The front carries a white printed tile — clean, typographic, unambiguous: the organization's logo, the milestone (Merci pour tes 5 ANS, 10 ANS, 30 ANS), the recipient's name, and the exact date of recognition. Not the year. The exact date. That level of specificity is part of the message.

03 — The Detail That Changes Everything

What's Written on the Back

The front of the award is public-facing — name, milestone, date, brand. The back is private. It's addressed directly to the recipient, in their language, about their specific contribution. On the 30-year award, the message begins: "Avec toute notre gratitude, nous tenons à te remercier pour ces 30 années de service." It goes on to acknowledge the knowledge the person shared, the trust they built, their commitment to the organization's mission.

This is engraved directly into the oak — not printed, not stuck on, not attached as a separate card. The words are in the material. They don't come off. They don't fade. In twenty years, that text will still be there, in the same wood, in the same depth.

That permanence is part of the message too. The organization isn't just thanking this person today. It's recording that the relationship happened, in an object built to last.


04 — Design That Earns Desk Space

Why This Award Doesn't End Up in a Drawer

Most recognition objects fail the desk test: within a few months, they migrate from the desk to a shelf, and from the shelf to a box. The reason is usually that they look generic — they could belong to anyone, from any organization, for any reason.

The PRD and OIQ awards pass the desk test for several reasons working together. The oak grain means no two pieces are identical — the natural material ensures individuality without any extra effort. The colored acrylic grid is visually distinctive enough to be interesting as an object even before you read it. And the personal message on the back means there's a reason to turn it over, read it again, show it to someone.

It's an object with a front and a back. Most trophies only have a front. That difference — the private message on the reverse — is what makes this a keepsake rather than a recognition prop.
