What Is a Trophy? Meaning, History, and Modern Uses

A trophy is an object given to acknowledge achievement, merit or excellence, in a particular activity, sport or competition. Originally awards for military achievements, trophies are now more formally created as a decorative item in sports and other competitions, business and so on. Our Custom Trophies are made from Acrylic, Metal, Wood, Crystal, Glass & Gypsum materials and can be sourced from our stock range or made to order. This enables Take Awards to be your only supplier of your premium corporate needs.

Defining a Trophy

A trophy is an award given to acknowledge something that has been accomplished. A trophy is an object with mass (size) and is typically sculptured and offset from some type of base, unlike a flat object like a medal or plaque that can be worn and therefore displayed. A trophy is not designed to be worn like a medal, it is intended to be displayed. Conversely, a plaque is always displayed on the wall and is always visible, a trophy can be displayed in a less prominent place and only occasionally viewed.

The Custom Shape Award is a trophy shape that can be used to recognise achievement in just about any field of endeavour. Sports, business and a host of other special achievements. The Custom Shape Award is available in a wide range of materials - everything from very affordable options through to more premium advanced materials. Discuss your award and recognition needs with one of our consultants. Whether you're an event co-ordinator, an HR manager or a business looking to develop an awards and recognition programme, we have the expertise to help.

Historical Origins

Trophies originate in ancient Greece, about 500 BCE when the word ‘tropaion’ is derived from the word ‘trope’ which means defeat. Greeks would take enemy weapons and pin them to the ground on the battlefield and would write the word tropaion above them. The Romans adopted this practice of the trophy and created a tropaea out of a column. The word then evolved into a type of record of the event.

Sports clubs in the 19th century established competitions that carried awards such as the America’s Cup trophy. Created for the purpose of sporting competition rather than violence, the modern award company Take Awards continues this tradition by creating bespoke awards from metal and crystal and creating replicas of an exact scale and detail for the clients.

Materials in Trophy Making

As you would expect, contemporary trophies are made from an extensive array of materials. Metals for their strength, woods for their warmth, and acrylic for its contemporary qualities. Crystal and glass for their glamour and sophistication, and gypsum for that affordable yet intricate design elements. And the best trophies of all will utilise a blend of materials, for example, crystal atop a wood base, to produce truly exclusive works of luxury.

Evolution in Sports

Sports trophies trace their origins back to athletic cups of the Victorian times and evolved into such forms as the gold-plated globe FIFA World Cup trophy (1930). The Vince Lombardi Trophy of the National Football League's (NFL) Super Bowl for American football is another example of over-explaining in design. It is a 22 pound sterling silver trophy 22 inches tall and weighing 22 pounds.

We have recently started to manufacture esports trophies made from acrylic in a very futuristic design. Another reason that some Event Organisers have chosen to work with Take Awards is because of our fast turnaround for the production of a wide range of sports trophies made from traditional metals with bespoke gypsum bases for presentation of awards at events.

Corporate and Business Applications

Business trophies can be used to promote a company culture through the use of sales awards and innovation awards. Did you know that employee recognition can increase employee satisfaction by as much as 25%? Business trophies for “Employee of the Year” are often used by many HR managers as an expression of the professionalism of management and often in crystal.

Take Awards specialise in creating exclusive awards in glass, metal for the corporate gift sector. Awards can be fully bespoke to individual client's design requirements. An integral part of the service that Take Awards offer to event planners, is that of one stop shopping in relation to sourcing awards for gala dinners and conferences.

Modern Customization Trends List

Trophy Design Process Steps

Creating a standout trophy follows structured steps:

  1. Define purpose and theme (e.g., sports victory or sales milestone).

  2. Select materials: metal for weight, crystal for sparkle.

  3. Sketch and 3D model for client approval.

  4. Prototype in gypsum for testing, refine to final acrylic/wood build.

  5. Engrave, assemble, and quality-check before shipping.

As producer-supplier, Take Awards handles all stages in-house, delivering high-quality results swiftly.
